Hire Content Writers
The Ultimate Guide
I saw a post on a Facebook page this morning. The person was complaining about how he hired a content writer for his website for a reasonable price and how it ended up badly. That dude lost his money, didn’t get a quality content he wanted and ended up complaining on Facebook.
This isn’t rare. In fact, it happens so often.
You hire a content writer, he doesn’t live up to your expectation and you end up wasting time, energy and money.
That is exactly why I have put together a guide on Hiring a Content Writer.
Before diving into the top, let’s answer this important question;
Who is a content writer?
In business terms, a content writer is anyone who specializes in writing engaging content for a business, website or other marketing materials.
Should you hire a content writer for your business?
Well, should you really hire a content writer?
I mean, writing a few hundred words wouldn’t be that difficult right?
Well, that is very far from the truth.
Writing a proper, engaging content that will keep your customers glued to the website can be really tough. In fact, it can take weeks for even expert writers to craft a really good piece of content.
Here is why you need great content and an awesome content writer:
Content is King
This is the new norm now. Content rules the internet. There used to be a time when salesmen could sell products and services tricking the customers. It doesn’t work anymore. People know when they see deception, they have the internet, Google. So what is it that works? You help then, you convince them that you can solve their problem, they pay you. As simple as that. And the easiest way for you to help your customers? Excellent, informative and kick-ass content!
Let’s get somewhat technical now. Google has changed since its Panda update.
Why Google panda is important?
Panda algorithm essentially stops spammy low-quality content from rising to the top rank in google.
One more addition is the Rank Brain update.
What is Google Rank Brain?
Rank Brain is a machine-learning based algorithm that instead of just focusing on keywords, tries to understand the search query and the user intent. That is why keyword focused, low-quality content is dead. Only high-quality contents that provide actual value to the searchers rank higher up in the search results page.
One of the main signs for Google to understand your content are the keywords used. Including your main keyword and related keywords in the content is essential. A good content writer can help you incorporate those keywords without compromising the flow and quality of the article.
Before hiring, ask yourself these questions
Before you direct content writers, you must get yourself sorted. You must be able to define your vision, needs and a reasonable knowledge about the kind of content you want. I will not list everything down here, but have included the most important ones.
What is it that you want to achieve with the content?- THE GOAL
The articles you need has a purpose and has to be crafted keeping in mind the GOAL that you want to achieve. Consider these, is it for an ad? Or is it for an eBook? Or a blog post? Establish the purpose you want to achieve.
What is your Budget?
Here comes the important part. How much money can you afford spending on the writer?
Deciding your budget will bring in clarity while choosing the suitable candidate for your gig.
What type of content do you need?
Technical contents are as the name suggests, technical. These require in-depth knowledge of the topic and are generally difficult to write. This domain includes user manuals, privacy policies, legal notices, terms and conditions, etc.
Non-technical content differs significantly from technical content. These are the ones developed using imagination, stories, humour, persuasion, and wordplay. Being highly informal, some writers use slang language in this type of writing.
Where to find content writers?
Birds of the same feather flock together
It’s a famous saying and that applies to writers too. If you want to hire a content writer, go to the place where they hang out.
For you, I have listed some of the places where you can find/hire writers.
Local Content Writer
Simply google ‘content writers around me”, you will find hundreds of results for local content writer. There are agencies, freelancers, full-time writers that you can find around you.
One more way I like looking is on local listings. These sites also have reviews, ratings, and options to verify their portfolio before even communicating with the writer.
Most writers prefer working online. That is why you need to get familiar with these sites.
- Text broker
- Writer Access
- Facebook Groups
Apart from these sites, there are online agencies that provide high quality content and also take care of content promotion as well.
We at Creators Den undertake such projects.
Questions to ask the content writer
There are many crappy content writers out there. Trust me, I have had some terrible experiences. If precautions are not taken, you will end up like the guy whom I mentioned in the introduction.
We don’t want that, do we?
Here are a few questions you want to ask the writer before hiring him:
Experience does teach a lot. The more he has written, the better he will be. Ask for his experience, the number of years he has been in the industry, his previous work records, etc. This will help you know if he knows what he is doing or not.
Hiring a writer who has expertise in a niche is always better than going for a generalist.
Think of it this way. You have throat pain. Would you prefer an E.N.T specialist or a general doctor?
Writers who have been writing in a particular niche are knowledgeable and can write the best content on that particular topic.
The tone of the content is something people often neglect. It is a really important factor that will make or break the engagement of your content. Marketing materials, blog posts, website content, technical guidelines all have their own unique tones. Mixing them gives your readers a signal that you are not authoritative enough.
Look how I’m writing this. Through this post, I want to share my experience and knowledge as a FRIEND, not a teacher and I’m certain that it reflects in my tone!
Although SEO is a different category of service, it is a must for writers to have a basic knowledge of SEO(Search Engine Optimization). This includes keyword research, checking density, analyzing plagiarism, optimizing titles, etc.
You need your content to rank on Google and without SEO it is impossible. So always look for a writer who has a basic understanding.
A portfolio contains some of the best contents that the content writer has written, be it blogs, website content, white papers, marketing materials, etc.
When I hire a writer, I always look for contents that are published, instead of a word document or PDF. This let’s me ensure that the writer is legit and has skills.
Remember this, even if you skip all the steps above, looking at the portfolio is a must!
If there’s a doubt regarding the portfolio, you can always ask for a short sample article on a topic of your choice and check it for plagiarism. Please do check for plagiarism!
How much do content writers charge?
Or, How much should you pay a content writer?
In the market, you will find 3 kinds of writers in general; beginners, intermediates and experts.
And there are different ways in which the writers charge.
